  • Has a personal touch in both the salutation and the subscription.

A Formal letter is written for official purposes. It can be one of enquiry, complaint, appreciation, one that makes a request, provides information and so on.
A Formal letter
  • Is written in Formal language. 
  • Includes all the important details and relevant information. 
  • Has a standard format. 
A Formal letter must include the 
  • Sender's name and address. 
  • Receiver's name and address. 
  • Date (5 November 2022/November 5, 2022)
  • Salutation/greeting (Dear Sir, Dear Madam, Dear Ms Patel)
  • Subject of the letter- the topic of the letter in brief.
  • Opening- a brief line about the purpose of the letter.
  • Main body of the letter. It should be precise, avoid unnecessary details and should be divided into paragraphs that flow logically and read well.
  • Complimentary close/closing (yours sincerely).
  • Sender's signature and name. 
We do not use a comma at the end of every line in the address.
